The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR) in Somalia, founded in October 2001, works to promote successful federal democratic transition values and integrity for Somali citizens in respect to the International Principles and Universal Declarations of Human Rights as common standards of achievement for all people in Somalia to create conditions whereby each individual can enjoy universal human rights and fundamental freedoms. CDHR promotes the protection of human rights in compliance with international human and humanitarian rights obligations without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The CDHR advocates to build the capacity of the people working in public administration, the media and the Civil Society/NGO sector; policy work and research in the field of human and rights as well as advocacy actions aimed at policymakers to improve the protection of human Rights, social justice and sustain democratization process in Somalia.

Democracy involves the right of the people freely to determine their own destiny. The exercise of this right requires a system that guarantees freedom of expression, belief and association, free and competitive elections, respect for the inalienable rights of individuals and minorities, free communications media, and the rule of law.
